Get Ready – New Mass Effect PC patch coming

January 31st, 2009 Jarralz No comments

PC players rejoice; Bioware says an omnibus patch for Mass Effect is in the works. While not specifying its content just yet, it’ll likely address issues discussed on the Bioware forums.

Bioware community dude Chris Priestly said they’ve been observing “the different Mass Effect PC forum communities” and gathering feedback. Both BioWare and Demiurge will jointly develop the patch, whose time-stamp is just “coming soon” as of now.

“Thank you all for taking the time to provide feedback to help us make Mass Effect PC a better game,” he says.

I can’t begin to offer speculation on what this might entail as I haven’t played it on the PC. But it sounds comprehensive. The patch will be available for all versions — retail, Steam, etc.

Activision’s Kotick Confirms DJ Hero Game This Year

January 31st, 2009 Jarralz No comments

Activision’s DJ Hero, a widely-rumored music game supported by a turntable peripheral, is set to release this year, says CEO Bobby Kotick.

Speaking at the Davos World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Kotick responded to CNBC reporters’ questions about innovation in the games business by touting the upcoming product.

“We have this product called DJ Hero coming out later this year, which is a turntable that you can actually play competitively, spin discs and mix on,” he explained, although he offered no further detail on released dates or any other related information.

The game seems conceptually similar to Scratch: The Ultimate DJ, a previously announced game from 7 Studios and Genius Products, in development with the help of hip hop veteran Quincy Jones III. It’s also accompanied by a turntable controller, and gameplay focuses on the DJ experience.

Specifically on peripheral-driven titles’ ability to widen markets, Kotick noted, “This physical interface is starting to have a real impact on the consumer.”

Earlier in the same interview Kotick was asked about Activision’s positioning against the global economic decline.

“We’re sitting on $3 billion in cash and no debt,” he said simply. “We’ve been fortunate not to have to access the credit markets.”

Would Activision consider using any of that money for further business acquisitions? Kotick says right now the company is “focused on running our business,” but at the same time, “it’s nice to know that you have the strength… of balance sheet if there is a strategic opportunity.”

Top Oblivion DLC Revealed, Horse Armor Surprisingly Popular

January 31st, 2009 Jarralz No comments

Bethesda Softworks‘ campaign to incrementally squeeze money from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion players has been a huge success. So much so that offering up downloadable horse armor wasn’t the flop it should have been.

In fact, the infamous “Horse Armor” download for Oblivion, released in April of 2006, ranked ninth on the top ten downloadable content packs as of whenever Bethesda decided to stop counting. The good news for fans of dressing their horsies is that, according to Bethesda’s Ashley Cheng, the pretty little suits of equine armor continue to sell daily.

For the full list, read on.

1. Wizard’s Tower
2. Thieves Den
3. Mehrunes Razor
4. Spell Tomes
5. Vile Lair
6. The Orrery
7. Knights of the Nine
8. Shivering Isles
9. Horse Armor
10. Fighter’s Stronghold

Why is “Fighter’s Stronghold” dead last? Cheng notes that the list ranks purchased downloads. It was, at certain points, given away as a free download.

EA Black Box doing secret NFS game

January 31st, 2009 Jarralz No comments

EA have hit the big, red reset button on the Need For Speed franchise. As we heard, three new games are coming. No, wait. Seems there are four new games coming.

Blackbox – despite recent layoffs – still have the manpower and the time to work on not just NFS: World Online, but a “future action title in the franchise”. Action? Since Shift is going the simulation route, Nitro the Mario Kart one and World Online the…online market, could he mean a return to the get-your-cans-out-luv, bright pink Honda racer boy theme of the last few games?

EA Games’ Keith Munro, meanwhile, has said the sudden reboot of the series has nothing to do with recent financial woes, and more to do with EA’s recent move towards “crafting different games for different audiences and their unique tastes in the driving category”.

EA Reveals Three New Need For Speed Games For 2009

January 30th, 2009 Jarralz No comments

EA plans to publish three separate new Need for Speed games in 2009, each tailored to specific formats and featuring a radical change of focus from previous titles.

In previews with a number of consumer websites, including GameSpot and Eurogamer, EA revealed new title Need for Speed: Shift for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and PSP.

Intended to be a much more serious racing simulation than previous games, the title is being developed by a combination of internal and external resources in the UK.

The game will be overseen by Black Box executive producer Michael Mann, as well as EA Games Europe head, and Digital Illusions CE (DICE) co-founder, Patrick Soderlund. Development work will be carried out by new British studio Slightly Mad Studios. The London-based firm is led by SimBin co-founder Ian Bell, who worked on titles such as GT Legends and GTR 2.

The second game is currently known as Need for Speed: Nitro and will be released exclusively for the Wii and Nintendo DS. Developed by EA Montreal, the game is described as having a “unique visual style” but no screenshots have yet been released.

The final game is online PC title Need for Speed: World Online, a free-to-play title developed by Black Box and EA Shanghai. Aimed primarily at the Asian market, the game will launch there in the summer, with a North American release in winter 2009.

The announcements follow still unconfirmed reports that the majority of staff at EA Black Box, the traditional developers of the Need for Speed series, were laid off last week.

The remaining staff still appear to be in full charge of the franchise though, with EA Games marketing exec Keith Munro admitting to Eurogamer that Black Box is also working on a fourth Need for Speed title.

“Black Box is currently working on a future action title in the franchise,” said Munro. He also insisted that the global economic crisis was not at the root of the changes: “This isn’t about quantity, this is about crafting different games for different audiences and their unique tastes in the driving category.”

The Conduit Channels Hardcore Gaming To the Wii: Hands-On

January 30th, 2009 Jarralz No comments

It’s clear that High Voltage Software are excited about the ability of The Conduit, their upcoming first-person shooter geared for hardcore gamers, to ratchet the Wii’s technology several notches past what it’s previously pulled off.

At a recent hands-on demo, the game’s art director, Matt Corso, was dropping all kinds of techie jargon into my tape recorder. But I can’t blame him; the game looks great, sporting draw-distances, bump-mapping, lighting, shadowing and particle effects that wouldn’t look out of place on the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360.

All that graphical panache was in full force while I was playing through a portion of the aliens-invade-Washington, D.C. title earlier this week.

I found myself treading a crowded urban street as the mysterious Mr. Ford, who works for the equally shadowy Trust, effortlessly shooting insect-like enemy “Drudge” and blowing up vehicles, all while taking in the pretty visual presentation.

Most impressive, especially for the Wii, were the explosions, which filled the screen in fiery detail on more than one occasion. But even tiny touches, like the realistic glare off the front of a newspaper vending machine, stand-out on the Wii. Also, the cool reload animations—an important part of any shooter—had me restocking my arsenal just to check it out again and again.

Just as impressive as the art direction, were the solid controls; I haven’t felt this comfortable pointing the remote like a gun since strapping on Samus’ arm canon in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Character movement with the nunchuck also felt fluid, aiming was spot-on, and even the camera managed to keep up with the quick-paced action.

It will likely still feel awkward to the mouse-and-keyboard crowd and gamepad jockeys—this isn’t the end-all, be-all control scheme for shooters—but The Conduit has definitely hit the sweet spot for shooter gaming on the Wii.

If you don’t like the default controls, you can always customize to your alien-thwarting heart’s content.

One of the title’s more innovative features is its almost stubborn insistence on meeting every single player’s style and preference in terms of personalizing the controls.

You can map pretty much whatever action you want wherever you like; not just the obvious stuff like moving and firing, either, but even things like what motion you prefer to use when tossing grenades can be tuned.

This feature also extends to the HUD elements, which can be placed anywhere on the screen, and options such as look sensitivity and turning speed. Best of all, you needn’t kick out to the main menu to tweak—it can all be done in-game.

The Conduit’s bar-raising visuals, tight gameplay, conspiracy-riddled alien invasion yarn, and gamer-loving customization options make it a real stand-out on the Wii’s 2009 line-up.

Because of technical limitations, a Wii game will likely never match the jaw-dropping power of a PS3 or Xbox 360 shooter, but The Conduit comes as close as the hardware may ever get.

Survey: 47% Of PC Game Purchases Are Digital

January 30th, 2009 Jarralz No comments

Getting sales data for the PC market is hard. The NPD Group try, but they don’t cover digital downloads, so there are big holes in their data. Enter Rock Paper Shotgun’s ginormous reader survey.

In an effort to try and get a sense of how many PC purchases are of the digital variety, the PC-focused site set up a poll. Sure, they’re “just” a blog, and no, they don’t do this kind of thing for money, but as the survey’s disclaimer notes, almost two thousand people responded. Considering that’s almost two thousand hardcore PC gamers, we’d call that a suitable sample audience and then some.

The results found that 93% of PC gamers bought at least one game digitally in the last 12 months. 71% of respondents bought more than four games digitally. That leaves the number buying games solely from a retail store at a meagre 7%.

Most alarming of all, however, is that after a little mathematics, the RPS team worked out that 47% of all PC game purchases in 2008 (at least among this survey group) were digital ones.

You ever wonder why people like Valve and Direct2Drive never release sales data for their services? It’s not because they’re covering for how few sales they make. They’re making sure they can keep that sweet, sweet honey pot all to themselves.
