Never mind that Hanuman: Boy Warrior – billed as the first console game developed entirely in India – is a crappy game. It’s controversial! Well, to an American Hindu, anyway.

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH is to bring its terrifying Silent Hill series to Wii™ as Silent Hill: Shattered Memories heads to the Nintendo system for the first time in Autumn. The game, a clever reimagining of the now out of print first Silent Hill title, will also be released for PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®2 at the same time.
While the game shares its twisting plot with the original PlayStation game, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories takes a different path in many, many ways. Characters can be approached but will offer different responses and be found in different places, while new clues and gameplay paths can be followed. The title follows Harry Mason, as he attempts to unravel the mystery of his missing daughter, Cheryl. A broken man, Mason’s investigations lead him to the mist-shrouded, snowy streets of Silent Hill: a malevolent town where the shadows play host to a wealth of evil, misshapen creatures. Read more…
Sony’s Jack Tretton says that dropping the price of the PlayStation 2 to $99 will bring new consumers to the PlayStation platform. Microsoft rolls its eyes.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft’s VP of the Interactive Entertainment Business Chris Lewis dismissed Sony’s announcement, suggesting that the key to staying competitive in the console market lay in developing the current generation consoles.
“This move from Sony at the end of the PS2’s life cycle is not unexpected. We believe, however, that the future lies in the growth of current generation consoles and Xbox 360, as the fastest growing games console last year, with sales up over 80 per cent, will continue to drive the market.
Essentially this is the corporate equivalent of rolling your eyes and muttering “whatever”, perhaps to cover abject relief over the fact that Sony didn’t lower the price of the PlayStation 3, a move that really would have give Microsoft a run for their money.
While the price of the PlayStation 2 is officially dropping in the U.S. and Europe, the price remains the same in the United Kingdom.
Starting tomorrow, the price of the PlayStation 2 in the states drops to $99. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has released a statement saying that the European price will be dropping to EUR 99. That leaves our friends in the UK, who according to a statement issued to Eurogamer, won’t be seeing a price cut whatsoever, remaining at its GPB 99 price point.
This is more than likely due to the voliatile state of the British Pound, which caused Nintendo to raise the trade price of the Wii console earlier this month.
As we posted earlier, Sony told us it was planning an announcement for Tuesday. Today is Tuesday, and Sony has made its announcement. (Hint, this Target ad already announced it.)
And as we also told you earlier, we didn’t think this announcement was a PS3 price cut. From our original post: “We’re leaning towards a price cut, but we’ve got a sneaking suspicion that it’s the PlayStation 2 dropping to $99, and not a cut for the PlayStation 3.”
The console will now be priced at US$99.99 starting the first of April. The console’s previous price tag was $129.99.
“PlayStation 2 set the industry standard for worldwide mass market adoption and is a clear embodiment of Sony’s commitment to platforms that deliver 10-year product lifecycles. It’s a tribute to outstanding technology, great consumer value and unprecedented development support that we’ve now been able to do twice what no one else has ever accomplished,” said Sony exec Jack Tretton. “Demand for PlayStation 2 remains strong throughout the world, and the new $99 price point will bring in new consumers who will discover how PlayStation platforms are an outstanding choice for their gaming and home entertainment needs.
With nearly 1,900 PS2 titles and now this under-a-hundred-bucks price point, this is as good a time as any to pick up a PS2. Sony stated that it plans continued support of the highly successful platform, which is serving as a model for its new home console, the PLAYSTATION 3.
According to Tretton, “Just as PlayStation 2 is delivering on a 10-year lifecycle and helped expand and solidify the DVD format for home entertainment along the way, we believe PLAYSTATION 3 offers the same promise by helping secure the Blu-ray format and delivering unprecedented value as the total home entertainment solution for the next decade.”
Last year, the PlayStation 2 became the first game system to reach 50 million units sold in North America.
