E3 will be “really exciting”, says Epic Games

March 2nd, 2010 Jarralz No comments

epicgameslogo

Epic Games president Mike Capps has told GamesBeat the developer will have a “really exciting” E3.

“We might have a new [game] coming,” said Capps. “I think E3 is going to be really exciting for fans of Epic.

Already, Epic has a game in development from Polish developer People Can Fly, with the title to be published by EA. It was confirmed recently for Q4 FY11, between January-March 2011.

And then there’s the obvious one: Gears of War 3. The last on that was at TGS last year, when Capps said the next time we’d see a Gears game would be the next-gen. He retracted his comments soon after.

Other than that – and previous comments by Cliff Bleszinski, where he was prepping to reveal “awesome shit” when “the weather’s warm” – nothing has been hinted at by the studio.

E3 takes place on June 15-17 in Los Angeles.

Thanks, D’Toid.

Sony warns not to connect to PSN with “any consumer units”

March 2nd, 2010 Jarralz No comments

psnlogo

Sony has just issued a stark warning against connecting any PS3 to PSN on its DevNet.

Said the firm on the developer-only resource just now: “We would also recommend not connecting any consumer units to the PSN to the network for the remainder of today.”

The note is the latest in a horror day for Sony, in which first-gen PS3s on a global level were struck with a clock bug that prevented them from connecting to PSN and put them at risk of Trophy data failure.

SCEE has just issued a consumer-facing statement on the matter, confirming the issue is related to the machine’s clock and saying it hopes to have matter resolved within 24 hours.

The DevNet line is in contrast to the statement, which merely warns, “If you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

“As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error.”

For a full run-down on the day’s events, hit this.

Sony details “fat” PS3 bug, aiming for fix “within the next 24 hours”

March 2nd, 2010 Jarralz No comments

ps3logo

Sony has issued a full status update on the crippling “fat” PS3 blog plaguing machines worldwide today, “caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.”

According to the following statement we just received from SCEE, the company is aiming to have the issue resolved in the next day.

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:
* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
* Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please check either the PlayStation blog (for SCEE: www.blog.eu.playstation.com/for SCEA: www.blog.us.playstation.com) or PlayStation.com.

As detailed in full here, first-gen PS3s have been smitten globally with an error message today, the result of a problem that prevents machines from connecting to PSN and puts them at risk of Trophy data corruption.

Heavy Rain suffering shortages, new stock coming next week

March 2nd, 2010 Jarralz No comments

Heavy Rain 3

SCEE’s told MCV that Heavy Rain is currently suffering retail shortages in some places, but it insists new stock is coming to retailers next week.

The Quantic Dream thriller went in at number one in its first two days on sale in the UK in the latest charts released this morning: the first game to do so for Sony since Killzone 2 last February.

But Sony’s said it will need more “footwork” to acquire a copy right now.

“We have been extremely delighted with the demand for Heavy Rain,” said a rep.

“Whilst it isn’t out of stock we are aware that supplies are running low. There is still supply in the chain, but I’m afraid if you’re hunting for a copy it may require a little extra footwork. There will be more stock arriving next week.”

The company further added: “In the meantime we thank everyone for their excitement and their support for this title and also for their patience if they are still seeking a copy.”

The thriller is a fantastic game, judging by these reviews and our opinion. Shame we can’t play it, then.

Ubisoft promising “big news” for R.U.S.E. this week

March 2nd, 2010 Jarralz No comments

ruse

Ubisoft’s revealed it’s planning to announce some “big news” for the Eugen-developed RTS R.U.S.E. on Wednesday.

The firm’s Aymeric Evennou said in a tweet:

It’s gonna be hard to wait until Wednesday to share this #RUSE big news … We’re too excited!

If we had to guess, we reckon it’s a set-in-stone release date. The title’s been down for FY2011 after it was delayed in January.

It’s due out on PS3, 360 and PC.

Thanks, PSLS.

Uncharted 2 is bookies favourite for BAFTA GOTY

March 2nd, 2010 Jarralz No comments

uncharted210

Bookmakers Victor Chandler has made Uncharted 2: Among Thieves the favourite to win the GAME Game of the Year award at the BAFTAs in nearly two weeks time.

The Naughty Dog actioner is the 6/4 favourite for the award, which is the only one picked by the public.

Meanwhile, other contenders include Modern Warfare 2 at 9/4, Batman: Arkham Asylum at 6/1 and Assassin’s Creed II with 4/1. The rank outsiders are FIFA 10 and Street Fighter IV at 33/1.

“Uncharted 2 is a very strong favourite at 6/4 and we’ve already taken numerous four figure bets on it. For those looking for an outside bet we have seen support for FIFA 10 at 33/1. It’s always tricky offering odds on a public vote so we’ll be keeping a close eye on the money rolling in,” said Peter Laverick, Managing Director of Victor Chandler, speaking to GI.

“We’ve already seen huge interest from all over the world in this year’s award with people campaigning online for their favourite title,” said GAME’s Neil Ashurst.

“As the deadline looms closer, I would urge all gamers to cast their vote at baftagameaward.com and make sure their voice is heard.”

The BAFTAs take place on Friday, March 19 in London. The full list of nominees are here.

The APOCALYPS3 – everything so far

March 2nd, 2010 Jarralz No comments

defcon1

The world is coming to an end – at least, that’s what it feels like to “fat” PS3 owners right now, with the machines experiencing a worldwide bug blackout.

We have everything rounded up from the situation so far after the break.

  • Beginning with the initial outbreak, the base story is here. PS3s are seeing errors that prevent them connecting to PSN, it was reported, with further user information pointing to some kind of clock error. 8001050F error codes, apparently, are indicative of the machine being locked off PSN and being susceptible to Trophy data corruption. Not mentioned in Nathan’s story this morning is that this appears to only be happening to fat PS3s. PS3 Slim models seem to be getting away with it, and are carrying on as normal, according to this SCEA tweet.
  • It appears that even if you’re PS3 isn’t plugged in or is just on standby, your console will be affected as long as it’s a pre-Slim model. Said Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter: “Yup, confirmed on my NTSC 60GB Launch PS3 left on standby yesterday…”
  • As well as retail units, DF also confirmed that debug units for developers and journalists aren’t working either, stating even if you had it plugged out at the mains, you’re a goner as well: “PS3 bug also affects units that have been completely removed from the mains too… confirmed on my TEST unit too. Hits on boot, pre-login.” Ouch.
  • As for what SCEE, a statement sent to VG247 this morning, says: “We have found out that some users are experiencing a network connection failure when signing on to PlayStation Network.  We are currently looking into the issue to identify the cause of this network connection failure and will update further information as necessary (on the Blog /or official website/).  We appreciate for your understanding and continued support.”
  • The whole situation has even gone as far as even trending on the service. In the UK, the error code “8001050F” was one of the big talking points, while worldwide, “PS3″ is also there as well.
  • Develop’s also reporting that debug PS3s are being hit by the error.
  • DF’s reported you can’t go back to an older firmware to fix the problem: “Flashing to a higher firmware doesn’t fix the PS3 bug by the way on either retail or debug units
  • UK Community Manager for PlayStation, MusterBuster, has posted the first real statement we’ve had on the situation this afternoon from SCEE: “Our teams are currently working on a fix for this issue. We have no details of an ETA yet. We expect to have further news shortly.
  • MAJOR UPDATE FROM MB. Confirms the problems stem from the console’s clock functionalty The full update is below (thanks, Redh3lix): “Update: 16:58 As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today.  This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.Errors include:

In the meantime, if you have one of the above listed models, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.  As mentioned above the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error.  We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

  • MAJOR ALERT: SCEE’S DEVNET IS WARNING EVERYONE NOT TO USE THEIR PS3s TONIGHT – ON FAT OR SLIM PS3s.
  • Finally, for now, if you haven’t seen it already, you really need to. This video shows the need to own noobs at Modern Warfare 2. Give this guy a view or two: he deserves it, just for the line “I’m so pissed off right now, I had to put some fucking pants on.” Legend. Watch the video below.

We’ll update this post throughout the day in case anything happens. If you have anything to add to this, add it below. Fingers crossed we’ll go back to Heavy Rain soon, innit.
