“The main reason we delayed Dark Void was because we really wanted to spend the extra time we needed to re-polish it and add a new feature,” Said Dark Void associate producer Shana T.Bryant . The new feature is hovering: by hitting the jump button twice, you can now hover in place, rising higher by continuing to hold the jump button. In happy news for people who want to play Dark Void without going insane with frustration, the damage model has also been tweaked such that wall collisions don’t result in instant death.

Press Release after the Break:

SAN MATEO, Calif. — May 19, 2009 — Capcom® Entertainment, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, has shipped Bionic Commando® for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. Bionic Commando is rated M for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board and carries a suggested retail price of $59.99.

Taking its inspiration from its 8-bit namesake — released on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1988 — Bionic Commando features Nathan Spencer (voiced by Mike Patton, lead singer of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle), a shining example of the technological advances made by the Federal Bionic Armaments Development Division. An expertly trained operative, Spencer is able to target and take out enemies while hanging upside down, climbing a building or even in mid-swing. At close quarters, the bionic arm packs a mean punch, while from a distance; objects such as boulders and cars can be grabbed and launched at enemies.

Bionic Commando harnesses the power of the latest generation of hardware to fully exploit the incredible swing gameplay that made the original title so unique. The ruins of Ascension City and its surroundings provide an engaging environment of towering buildings, suspended roadways and monorails, deep canyons and sheer rock faces that allow gamers to traverse each area via multiple routes using swinging, rappelling, climbing and wall-walking techniques, forcing players to think in three dimensions.

Players will also be able to take their swinging skills from single-player mode and challenge their friends online in a fierce 8-player multi-player game that will be available when the game ships on PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE. Players will need to utilize all the skills honed in single player such as Zip Kick, Death from Above and Adrenaline attacks to show the true power of a Bionic Commando.

The development team behind Bionic Commando represents a unique collaboration of cultures and skills, consisting of an American Producer living in Japan, a Japanese Creative Advisor and Swedish developer GRIN providing a European influence. This partnership provides a further example of Capcom’s strategy to work with the best developer talent while maintaining the unique elements of creativity and approach to game design for which Capcom is renowned.

As promising as Capcom’s upcoming Wii game Spyborgs is, it runs the risk of suffering the fate of the company’s last Wii original. But Capcom thinks it figured out what went wrong last time.

Spyborgs, the impressively-rendered co-op brawler created by Bionic Games for the Wii, gives a good first impression. It looks better than most Wii games and plays well.

The same things could have been said about 2007′s puzzle-based treasure-hunting game, Zack & Wiki. It looked great. It played well. It wasn’t a hit.

How to avoid that history repeating itself?

Just hours ago, as we wrapped up a two-person co-op run through the same levels Kotaku chief Crecente played in Monte Carlo, the game’s senior producer, Daryl Allison told me what lesson Capcom had learned:

The struggle for Zack & Wiki, Allison said, was that “the art style made the game come across as a kids’ game, but it played like more of an adult’s game.” The graphics were silly; the gameplay complex.

Spyborgs is going for a teen market (but I enjoyed it, ok?) and therefore pushing a more all-ages Pixar style.

If this is already more than you’re used to reading about graphics for a Wii game, that’s no accident. Graphics are important to this Wii game. Allison said the team’s philosophy is that: “If we can be compared with the God of Wars and Devil May Crys then we have to look that good. There’s no excuses.”

Spyborgs will be out for the Wii later this year. And, if all goes well, it will look not just like it plays, but as good as it’s supposed to play. That, perhaps, is doing a Wii game right.

Street Fighter IV is coming to the PC. PCs use a mouse and keyboard. For Street Fighter IV, that’s, uh, not exactly ideal. So smartly, Capcom will be releasing a control pad bundle.

Of course, for those already planning on using their own controller (or who are happy using a keyboard), you can just pick up the game for $40. But for $60, as expected, Capcom will also be selling the game with a packed-in Mad Catz Street Fighter IV Fight Pad, which while useless for most other games, is tailored perfectly for Street Fighter IV.

Both versions of the PC edition will be out on July 7, though PAL customers note, the Mad Catz bundle won’t be available in stores in Europe or Australasia, so you’ll have to order it online.

There was a time when the heart of video game design was inarguably in Japan. But increasingly game developers from around the world, including Japan, see that seat of power moving west.

Last month, Japanese game developer Capcom gathered journalists from around the world to Monte Carlo to show them their line-up of new titles and talk a little bit about their struggle to deal with that shift

Among the developers on hand was the producer of Lost Planet, the designer of Mega Man and creator of Dead Rising and the co-producer of zombie thriller Resident Evil 5.

“Five years ago, Capcom was at the very bottom of the industry, it was up to me to figure out how we were going to get us out of this pit,” said Mega Man creator and head of Capcom Research and Development Keiji Inafune. “I realized the key word we had to focus on was globalization. It’s not that Capcom hasn’t had global hits, but there was a long time when key products weren’t selling around the world.”

Inafune said the company realized they had to “strengthen their will”, to take risks and create games that traditionally would have been easy to reject.

That thinking lead to a revitalization for Capcom, with the developer creating Dead Rising, a free-roaming game about a photojournalist’s fight to survive a zombie-infested town and expose the truth to the world. It’s also a game with a distinct Western look.

“Back when we made Dead Rising I remember distinctly a lot of Japanese development and publishing houses said is this a title that is being developed in the west, because it didn’t look like anything being developed in Japan at the time,” Inafune said. “It was always our intent to make a game that was distinctly western stylized from the start, so to have other developers tell us that, was the biggest compliment we could have gotten.”

But when the game hit the U.S., western press and developers noted that while the game looked western, something about it “felt Japanese,” he said.

Inafune said he realized then that if Capcom was going to do a Dead Rising 2 they should go all of the way and have a Western developer make the game.

When Capcom met with Canada-based Blue Castle Games, the thing that sold them on the developer was the fact that they saw the original Dead Rising as a Western game with some unique Japanese elements to it.

“It was that one statement that made me realize this was the one company that could make a proper Dead Rising sequel,” he said. “Our big challenge to ourselves with Dead Rising 2 is to try and find the right blend between western design and Japanese design.”

Inafune added that Capcom isn’t trying to “rip off” what is popular in the west, they’re after something new, “the perfect combination of western and Japanese game design.”

One of Capcom’s other big titles, Lost Planet 2, has gamers fighting across a slowly thawing frozen planet for limited resources. Interestingly, though, Capcom’s Jun Takeuchi, who worked on the original title and Resident Evil 5, says Lost Planet 2 won’t be trying to find that blend.

“Inafune talked about Dead Rising 2 being a game trying to combine the best of Japanese and western design and make it into something new,” Takeuchi said. “I think that’s a great idea, but Lost Planet 2 is taking a slightly different approach.

“What we are trying to do with Lost Planet 2 is different. We want to take a Japanese designed game and make it a success in the west.”

It is unusual for the best compliment for a video game to be that the PC version is identical to its console predecessors. But that’s the case with Street Fighter IV with one… well, three exceptions.

Playing Street Fighter IV last week using a Street Fighter Fight Pad plugged into a laptop made it easy to forget I wasn’t playing the game on a console. Despite the potential, not even the online play has been tweaked, according to Capcom. In fact, there was only one noticeable difference between the console versions and the PC one.

The PC game uses shaders to add three new filters that can be applied to the game’s graphics: Watercolor, Brushstroke and Poster.

Watercolor seems to diffuse the color a bit, adding a slight haze to everything.

Poster makes the colors a bit more vibrant and darkens the outlines of the art.

Brushstroke appears to be the most extreme, adding heavy outlines to the characters and almost saturating some of the colors.

Because the filters were created with the magic of shaders, Capcom says they won’t be coming to the console versions, not even as DLC.
