One of my goals in creating this site was to give myself a portal for speaking out against publishers who attempt to release anything worthwhile on a cell phone. Thus far, Square Enix has proven to be Read more…

Square Enix isn’t holding anything back at E3 next week. As expected, Square Enix will showcase Final Fantasy XIII for the PlayStation 3 and Dissidia Final Fantasy for the PlayStation Portable. But the company has more up its sleeve, as it plans to show off two new games: NIER, an action-adventure game, and Front Mission Evolved, a new third-person shooter.

NIER is the latest action-adventure game from Square Enix. Developed by cavia, the game is set in a “crumbling world plagued by disease and dark, unrecognizable creatures,” according to a statement from Square. You’ll play the role of NIER and follow his journey to discover a cure for his daughter, who is infected with the Black Scrawl virus. Read more…

Square Enix Totally Loses It, Releases 20-Disc Soundtrack

May 20th, 2009 Nevaeh No comments

Look, we all know that Square Enix like to milk the merchandising teet dry, but this, this is something else. Does the world really need a 20-disc soundtrack for, of all things, the SaGa series?

Square certainly think so, because to celebrate the series’ 20th birthday this year, they’ll be releasing just that. A mighty box comprising the original soundtrack (sorry, no re-recordings) to every SaGa game ever released. All nine of them. Across twenty compact discs. Also included is a bonus DVD, along with a price tag of, oh, USD$220.

How Long Until Final Fantasy XIII Is Out In Europe?

May 5th, 2009 Nevaeh No comments

As we’ve pointed out with numbers, few Japanese publishers are as tardy with their European releases as Square Enix. So how’s the Final Fantasy XIII localisation coming along, then?

In a statement that’s not exactly encouraging for European fans, Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase has told Videogamer:

Obviously we would like to release [in Europe] as soon as possible. Traditionally the Final Fantasy numbered series, it takes about half a year between the release in Japan and the release in North America, and another half a year before it’s released in Europe. But we would like to minimise this, this time.

For example we have already started recording English voices, and also the text localisation has been in progress, too. Normally we complete the Japanese version first, then move on to the US and EU versions, but this time there are some tasks that are happening simultaneously. So this time we’re hoping to release sooner than a year later than the Japanese release.

It’s amazing that we’re nine years into the 21st century, and 13 games into the Final Fantasy series, and Square Enix still don’t have their shit together. How is it Metal Gear Solid 4 can ship worldwide simultaneously, while Square can only offer “we’re hoping to release sooner than a year later than the Japanese release”?

Hope is no guarantee (less than a year can still be 11 months!), and hope won’t cut it with angry Europeans, Square Enix. Especially the ones that can’t speak English, and thus can’t import the US version.

Eidos Becomes Square Enix’s

April 22nd, 2009 Nevaeh No comments

Square Enix inches closer to its take over of Tomb Raider publisher Eidos, and the takeover is expected to go into effect tomorrow morning.

In February, both Square Enix and Eidos came to an agreement for the takeover, and the following month, Eidos shareholders overwhemingly approved of the action.

Eidos issued this statement earlier today: “The Board of Eidos is pleased to announce that the Court sanctioned the Scheme at the Court Hearing held today and that it also confirmed the associated Capital Reduction at that hearing.”

“As previously announced, the Scheme is expected to become effective on 22 April 2009 following the delivery of the Court Order to the Registrar of Companies and the registration by him of such Court Order.”

The London Stock Exchange suspended trading Eidos shares. On April 23, the Stock Exchange will cancel trading Eidos shares. The takeover will bring not only Tomb Raider, but also Deus Ex and Hitman into Square Enix’s franchise portfolio.
